15 minutes away from Figueres you will find Girona. It is located about 100 Km north of Barcelona and you can easily get there by train. The journey takes 1,30 hours. Tickets start at around 6 €. For timetables see www.renfe.es This is the cheapest and the easiest way to get there. Girona is an ancient city whose origins date back to the I century B.C. Many remains are still discernable today. Girona is one of the oldest and most beautiful Catalan cities, with a particularly interesting Jewish Quarter. The city has an exquisite walled historical centr, known as La Força Vella. Some of the most intresting spots include the fortress, the Cathedral, with an immense Gothic nave; the Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants and the church of Sant Nicolau. The Arab Baths, which boast a pavilion built on eight fine columns and crowned by an octagonal cupola, is one of the most important monument of the city and it is well worth a visit. To tell the truth, the whole province of Girona is wonderful! Thanks to the Girona's excellent position, between the Pyrenean chain and the Costa Brava, there are lots of different environments to explore, including several natural parks.
