Sagrada Familia of Barcelona

If you come to Barcelona you cannot miss La Sagrada Familia. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Barcelona. It is Antonio Gaudí's most famous and unfinished masterpiece. Even though the church is far from being finished, it is well worth a visit.

The construction of the neo Gotic style church started in 1882 and remains a work in progress. When Gaudì died in 1926, only one façade and one tower had been finished. Gaudì was constantly changing the design. Some parts of the unfinished church, Gaudí's models and his workshop were destroyed during the Spanish Civil war in 1936. The construction works taking place now are based on both reconstructed versions of the lost plans and on modern adaptations. Its most striking aspect is its spindle-shaped towers and every part of La Sagrada Familia is full of Christian symbolism. A total of 18 tall towers, represent the Twelve Aposteles, the Four Evangelist, the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, in ascending order of height. The church will have three great façades: the Nativity to the East, the Passion to the West and the Glory to the South, that has not yet been completed. The works are expected to be completed around 2026, in time for the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death. La Sagrada Familia was Gaudi's last project. Once he started working on it, he worked full time until he died. If you don't fear heights, don't miss to visit the towers! A lift and a long walk will lead you to the top of one tower from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Barcelona.
